Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Statement of Values

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the heart of our core principles here at the United Way of St. Clair County. Our goal is to have our Board of Directors, management, staff, and volunteers genuinely demonstrate the principles of diversity, which enrich our communities. We approach solutions to our community’s most pressing issues with an intentional commitment to equity across all boundaries including race, age, gender, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability. We value the visible and invisible qualities that make you who you are. We welcome that every person brings a unique perspective and experience to advance our mission and progress our fight for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in every community. Our ability to embrace diversity and to make it an integral part of our organization will enable us to serve our member agencies and the community more effectively. We are committed to building a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient organization. Join us in embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion for every person in every community we serve.

Anti-Racism/Ethnic Discrimination Statement

We recognize structural racism/ethnic discrimination and other forms of oppression have contributed to persistent disparities which we seek to dismantle.

We understand that these disparities have existed in the past and persist into the present.

We acknowledge that these inequities are the result of policies and practices that work to marginalize entire populations of people.

We unequivocally denounce racism/ethnic discrimination because it undermines the well-being and vitality of our community.

Our United Way will continually strive to engage community members, especially those whose voices have traditionally been marginalized.

We work with residents and public and private partners to co-create solutions that ensure everyone has the resources, supports, opportunities, and networks they need to thrive.

We commit to leveraging all of our assets (convening, strategic investments, awareness building, advocacy) to create a more equitable community.

(Note: much of the language above is adopted from the United Way’s Equity Vision in United Way’s Equity Framework: Strengthening Our Equity Muscle to Accelerate Impact, developed in collaboration with local United Ways.)
